Who Pisces Actually Is

Pisces runs from February 19 to March 20 and it's the last sign, which the tradition reads as carrying a little of the eleven that came before it. Take or leave the mythology; the behavior it describes is easy to verify. Drop a Pisces into any room, at any table, among any group, and inside ten minutes it has become somebody that room can talk to.

That's porousness. Mutable water, ruled by Neptune, the thinnest walls on the wheel. What's in the room gets in.

It's why Pisces is the best listener you'll ever have, why it knows you're upset before you've admitted it to yourself, and why it can come home from a party it enjoyed and lie awake all night carrying a mood that belongs to somebody else. The word people reach for is sensitive, and it's much too small a word for what's happening. Pisces is running everybody's weather at once, all day, with no filter, and it has done since it was small, and it has never once suspected that other people aren't.

Pisces Personality

The porousness shows up first as a kind of early warning. Pisces has the mood of a place a beat before anyone else does, often before the place has admitted to having one, so it's already bracing while everyone else is still smiling. It won't announce the reading. It just rearranges itself quietly to match, and by the time the tension surfaces it's the one person in the room who saw it coming.

It says yes and means it and then can't. That's the thing people find hardest about a Pisces. The yes was true when it was said, and then the moment moved, and Pisces cannot make itself do a thing it no longer feels.

It doesn't confront. Mutable water goes around. There's no scene, no slammed door, no argument to be had, just an absence where a person used to be, and by the time you notice, it's been going on a while.

And it's far harder to break than it looks. Pisces survives what flattens sturdier-looking people, because it never stands still and takes the hit. It gives, absorbs, goes around, and arrives at the other end changed and entirely intact.

Pisces Strengths

The empathy is operational. Pisces is the one who spots whoever's been left on the outside of a group, and goes and stands next to them, and does it without making a performance of the noticing.

It'll sit with somebody in the worst hour of their life and not try to fix it. That sounds easy. It isn't. Most people can't tolerate another person's pain without offering a solution to make the pain stop, because the pain is uncomfortable for them. Pisces can just stay there.

It forgives fast, sincerely, and without keeping a copy. No running tally, no anniversary of the wrong, no quiet raising of it years later.

And it makes things. Music, stories, food, an atmosphere in a house that people feel the second they walk in and can't explain afterward. Whatever imagination turns out to be, Pisces has an unusual quantity of it, and it doesn't only live in its head.

Pisces Weaknesses

Here's the part nobody writes about a Pisces. It'll suffer for you, and then it'll let you know.

It gives past the point it wanted to give, because saying no felt cruel, and then it carries the cost around where you can see it. Nobody asked it to. It'll say nobody has to. And you'll find yourself apologizing for something you didn't do, in a conversation you didn't start, feeling like a brute in your own kitchen.

It tells you the version that hurts you least. Then it has to maintain that version, and then another one underneath it, and by the time the truth surfaces it arrives as a demolition, and you'll be told you should have known.

It leaves months before it says so. Afterward you'll be able to name the week.

And the exits are all soft ones: the drink, the sleep, the scroll, the half-built other life, the person from years ago it still talks to at two in the morning about nothing at all.

Pisces in Love

Being loved by a Pisces is total, and if you've only ever been loved at normal volume it takes some getting used to. It goes all the way in. Your problems are its problems inside three weeks. It arranges its life around your moods without being asked and without mentioning that it's doing it, and you may not notice for years.

What it's loving, partly, is a version of you it built. That version is generous and very hard to live up to, and Pisces will keep loving it long after the evidence has stopped supporting it. This is how a Pisces stays four years past the exit, and how it ends up defending somebody to their own friends.

What it needs is to be chosen out loud, repeatedly. It won't believe it the first time and it won't believe it because you married it. The tell that it has stopped feeling chosen is that it starts asking for less.

Pisces at Work

Pisces is good at almost anything that runs on reading people and bad at almost everything that runs on claiming credit. It undercharges. It doesn't ask for the raise. Its idea turns up in somebody else's presentation and it says nothing, because saying something would be unseemly, and then it's quietly bitter for a year and won't say that either.

It'll take the job with the kind people over the job with the money. That's a defensible choice, and it should notice that it made one, because in ten years it'll be describing that choice as something that happened to it.

The caring and creative professions do fit, and they fit for a reason: attunement is the actual skill, and Pisces has more of it than anybody. The catch is that Pisces has no off switch. It takes the whole shift home, every night, for a decade, and then calls the exhaustion a personal failing.

Pisces as a Friend

Pisces is the one people confess to. It remembers everything you told it, including the parts you'd rather it didn't, and it'll ask how your sister's operation went eight months later, on the right day, having done the arithmetic quietly.

It's terrible about time. It'll miss the dinner, be sorry in a way you can't stay angry at, and miss the next one.

And it disappears. Not sulking: underwater. It'll be gone two months and surface exactly as warm as it was before, with no sense that anything needed explaining, which drives more organized friends to distraction.

The real flaw is the doors. Pisces cannot close one. Nobody has ever been fully thrown out of a Pisces's life, including the ones who earned it, and the ones who earned it know that perfectly well, and they keep coming back, and the door keeps opening, because shutting it would require Pisces to be somebody who shuts doors.

What Pisces Is Working On

The instruction Pisces always gets is 'boundaries,' which is correct and useless, because it's a noun and what Pisces needs is a verb.

Here's the verb. Be the source of somebody's disappointment, on purpose, in small doses. Say no to something you could easily have done. Watch the person be mildly let down. Survive it. Do it once a week until surviving it stops feeling remarkable, because until then you'll keep buying other people's comfort with your own life and calling that love.

Then start asking whose feeling this is. You walk into a room, and thirty seconds later there's a weight in your chest, and the question that saves you is: was I fine before I came in here? Most of the time you were.

And borrow a deadline, because you'll never be your own. A collaborator, a booked slot, somebody expecting you at nine who'll be annoyed. Pisces answers to a person waiting. It will never answer to a plan.

Pisces: Common Questions

Who is Pisces most compatible with?

Cancer and Scorpio, both at 10, tens in every column. Cancer is the one where nothing ever needs explaining. Scorpio is the one that gives Pisces a spine and won't take the softened version of anything. Taurus and Capricorn come next, both on 8, which is Pisces getting a life with a floor under it. Two Pisces reach a 9, the tenderest line on the grid and the one with a catch the number won't tell you: it's the only pairing here where nobody at all is holding a shape.

Who is Pisces least compatible with?

Sagittarius. A 2 overall, trust down at 1, friendship at 2. It's the lowest score on the grid and it's earned. Sagittarius is blunt on purpose, and Pisces bruises for a week over things Sagittarius forgot at lunch. Gemini follows on 3, for much the same reason at lower volume, with trust again scraping 2. Leo, Aries, Libra and Aquarius are 4s across the board. Everything down there needs Pisces to say what's wrong out loud.

Why does Pisces go quiet and disappear?

Because Pisces is mutable water, and water goes around an obstacle instead of through it. No scene, no slammed door, nothing to argue with. It's simply somewhere else. It usually isn't punishing you, though it looks identical from the outside. If you want it back, an interrogation won't do it. Go and find it, talk about ordinary things, stay a while. It'll surface. Then ask the question you wanted to ask.

Are Pisces really that fragile?

No, and it's the misread that follows the sign everywhere. Pisces feels everything and survives most of it, including things that flatten people who look far tougher, because it doesn't stand still and take the hit. What it's bad at is ordinary friction: the awkward conversation, the invoice, the small no. It'll come through a catastrophe intact and then be undone by a difficult phone call it's put off for three weeks.

How do you know a Pisces loves you?

It starts rearranging itself around you without being asked and without mentioning it. Your schedule wins. Your mood sets the temperature of the room. It'll know you've had a bad day from three words in a message and have done something about it before you get home. The thing to watch is the reverse tell: when a Pisces stops feeling chosen, it doesn't complain and it doesn't leave. It quietly lowers what it asks of you, month by month, until it's asking for almost nothing.
