Who Cancer Actually Is
Cancer runs June 21 to July 22, and the Moon rules it, which is the one body in the sky that visibly changes shape every night. That's the first thing to know about this sign. The mood arrives before the reason for it does, and it arrives in the house before it arrives in a sentence, and everybody else has to learn to read the barometer.
The second thing gets skipped in most descriptions, because it spoils the picture of a soft, passive homebody. Cancer is cardinal. It starts things. It just starts them sideways. Nobody voted for the Sunday lunch that's now a fixture, and nobody agreed that this would be the person holding everyone's spare keys and remembering which cousin isn't speaking to which. Cancer built that, on purpose, one small unrefusable act at a time, and now it's the structure the rest of you live inside.
So the popular idea of Cancer as the one who gets looked after is upside down. It's the one doing the looking after, and then waiting, sometimes for years, to be asked how it's doing.
Cancer Personality
Talk to a Cancer and you'll notice it answers the tone, not the words. You said the meeting went fine; it heard the flatness sitting on "fine" and it's already putting the kettle on. That's uncanny when you need it and unbearable when you wanted to be left alone, and there's no switch on it.
It asks questions that aren't questions. "Are you hungry?" sometimes means are you hungry. It can also mean are you angry with me, are you leaving, did I do something on Saturday. Cancer will ask six oblique times before it asks once, because a straight no can't be unsaid.
Underneath all of that sits a very long memory. Cancer keeps the family's account of itself: the photographs nobody else labeled, the full record of what happened at the funeral and who behaved badly at it. It's the one who knows. Everybody calls that sentimental, and it means the rest of them never have to remember a thing, because Cancer already has, down to the seating plan.
Cancer Strengths
Loyalty here isn't a mood, it's infrastructure. A Cancer who has decided you're one of theirs will drive through the night, take the call at any hour, lend money it needs back, and then never bring any of it up in an argument. Most people can't hold that last part; Cancer genuinely doesn't.
Then there's the reading. Cancer clocks the person at the edge of the party who's about to cry and gets to them before anybody else has noticed anything is happening. In a genuine crisis it stops being emotional altogether and turns eerily practical: it's the one making the calls, feeding people, handling the paperwork nobody else can face, while the assertive signs are still getting organized.
And it makes places where people want to be. Not decorated places. Places where you can turn up in a bad state, get handed food you didn't ask for, and not be interrogated about any of it. That's a skill, and Cancer is the only sign that treats it as a duty.
Cancer Weaknesses
The care has a price and Cancer never once says what it is. It gives, absorbs, covers, hosts, remembers, and mentions none of the cost, so the cost stays invisible right up until the night it all comes out at once, usually mid-argument over something tiny, a whole year of unspoken grievance let go in a single breath. "After everything I've done" is Cancer's native weapon, and the worst of it is how often it's fired without any awareness that it's a weapon.
The sulk is the other one. Cancer doesn't shout. It withdraws, and it takes all the warmth in the house with it, and the temperature drops several degrees, and when you ask what's wrong it tells you nothing's wrong. The silence is a punishment. Cancer will deny that with total sincerity.
And it doesn't let go. It forgives you out loud and forgets nothing, and what looks like peace is often just the week it stopped bothering to offer you anything.
Cancer in Love
Cancer courts by feeding you and by remembering. Three dates in, it knows your sister's name, your deadline, how you take your coffee, and the thing you said once about your father that you don't remember saying. It's overwhelming in the best possible way, particularly if you've spent a year dating people who check their phone at dinner.
What it wants back is not grand. It wants to be told, out loud, more often than seems necessary, that you're staying. Reassurance isn't a phase Cancer grows out of, and a partner who finds the question tiresome by year two will spend the rest of the relationship watching it get asked in worse and worse ways.
Where it goes wrong is the merge. Cancer wants one life, one calendar, one front door, and it will fold itself into yours so thoroughly that by the time it wants something of its own, it has lost the vocabulary for saying so.
Cancer at Work
Give Cancer something to protect and it'll outwork everyone in the building. A team, a ward, a class, a small company it has quietly adopted as family: the loyalty transfers, and so does the vigilance. It's the manager who knows which junior is falling apart at home and does something about it long before HR has a form for it.
What it will not do is ask. Cancer believes good work gets noticed, and that campaigning for a raise is a species of humiliation, so it waits to be offered, and the people who ask get paid. A working life of this produces someone highly competent, underpaid, and privately keeping count of every time they were passed over.
It also takes work personally, because to Cancer everything is personal. A curt email on a Friday afternoon will be reread four times and will spoil the weekend, and the person who sent it will have forgotten writing it.
Cancer as a Friend
Cancer's friendships are old. It has four people, it's had them since school or since the first job, and it'll still have them in thirty years. New candidates are auditioned slowly. Being liked by a Cancer is easy. Being let in takes about two years and one occasion where you showed up for something inconvenient.
Once you're in, it's almost absurd. It remembers your birthday, your mother's illness, the anniversary of the bad thing. It'll cook for you. It'll take your kids for a weekend without being asked twice. It'll ask the follow-up question nobody else thought to ask, three weeks later, when you'd assumed everyone had moved on.
The catch is that Cancer can't reliably tell being busy apart from being abandoned. Go quiet for a year because your own life caved in, and some part of it will have quietly counted that as being left. It won't say so. It'll just be a degree cooler when you resurface, and it warms back up slowly, over about a year.
What Cancer Is Working On
It all turns on one skill Cancer won't learn: saying the plain sentence. The sigh doesn't count. Neither does the flat voice, or the pointed clatter of plates going away too hard. The sentence is "I felt shut out last night, and I want you to tell me you're staying." It costs nothing, and it terrifies a sign that would rather be understood without asking, since asking means finding out you might not get it.
Second: let people leave the room. Somebody wanting an evening alone isn't the opening move in an abandonment. Cancer's radar is superb at reading mood and catastrophic at reading motive, and it can build an entire betrayal out of a short reply to a text.
Third, get something that's yours. A project, a Wednesday, a friend the family doesn't get to share. The shell is supposed to be somewhere you go, and it has slowly become somewhere you keep everyone else.

Scorpio and Pisces, and it isn't close: a 10 overall and a 10 in all six columns each. Neither of them ever asks Cancer to be less. Taurus and Virgo follow on 8, which is the water-and-earth deal, where Cancer supplies the warmth and they supply the floor under it. Two Cancers, and the care runs both directions at a volume most people never get near: a 9, tender all the way down.
