Cancer Compatibility

Cancer's grid is the most polarized on the site, and that tells you something true about how it loves. There's almost no middle to it. Water and dependable earth come in at eight and above; nearly everything else sits at four or below. Cancer doesn't do casual. A partner is either being folded into the life or being kept at the door, and there isn't a comfortable third setting available.

What decides which way it goes has very little to do with shared interests or how funny you are. It comes down to whether you'll say the reassuring thing without being asked for it, and whether you can be near a mood that fills the room and doesn't come with an explanation attached. Signs that treat feelings as weather do fine here. Signs that treat them as a problem to be solved, argued down or laughed off will lose this person slowly, over years, and probably won't be told why.

Cancer's Best Matches

Scorpio and Pisces are the two that never ask Cancer to turn the feeling down, and they're the only 10s on the board: a 10 overall and a 10 in each of the six columns, love through long-term. With Scorpio the relief is that the intensity gets met head-on. A sign accustomed to being the deepest person in the room abruptly isn't, and nobody suggests it's too much. Pisces does the same work with a lighter hand. Two people who take the temperature of a room on the way in, neither of whom ever has to explain what they meant by that.

The earth pair is undersold by its numbers. What Taurus brings, at 8, is ground: it doesn't budge, and a sign that panics about being left needs something unbudgeable to put a hand on. Virgo arrives at the same 8 from the other direction, turning up with the practical fix while Cancer is still busy feeling the feeling. Friendship hits 10 with each of them, and both run a household with almost no friction.

Two Cancers land on a 9, and the tenderness is real, but it settles to an 8 over the long haul, because a household needs one person who doesn't take the weather personally, and this one has two who do. Let both of them go quiet on the same evening and there's no one left to put the kettle on.

Cancer's Hardest Matches

Two entirely different disasters share the bottom of this board. Both score 2; trust, in each case, bottoms out at 1. Aries is the loud one: fast, blunt, and constitutionally unable to understand why a sentence it fired off and forgot is still being carried around a week later. It'll be baffled, then impatient, and Cancer will be wounded in a way it won't disclose, and you'll run that loop until somebody quits. Libra does the damage by being pleasant. It's charming, agreeable, keeps every room warm, and hands Cancer nothing solid to hold. Pair a sign that needs to be told it's the only one with a sign that keeps everybody's approval in play, and the jealousy that produces will not fix itself.

Above them is a band of 4s that erodes instead of exploding, and each one erodes for its own reason. Leo wants the party; Cancer wants the door shut. Sagittarius announces it's going away for three months and can't grasp why that's an event. Gemini and Aquarius will discuss a feeling with warmth and close attention and will never simply sit in it with you, which Cancer reads as coldness, because from where it's standing that's what it is.

That leaves Capricorn on 5, an honest maybe. The opposite sign, so it's either the missing half or a decades-long cold war.

What Cancer Needs From a Partner

Say the thing. Cancer needs a partner who volunteers reassurance instead of waiting to be asked for it, because by the time it asks, it has been sitting with the doubt for a fortnight and has invented three explanations, all of them bad. "I'm not going anywhere" is worth more here than a holiday.

It needs somebody who can be near a mood without treating it as an accusation. When a Cancer goes flat and can't say why, it doesn't want the mood interrogated or repaired. It wants you in the same room, doing something else, unbothered by it. That is the entire skill, and most signs can't manage it.

It needs the truth early. Cancer's imagination is far more brutal than any piece of actual bad news, and a secret kept kindly for a month will do more damage than whatever was being hidden.

And it needs to be asked. Not "how are you" at the door. Asked properly, once, in a way that makes it clear the answer won't be inconvenient. Almost nobody does this, which is why Cancer keeps giving instead.
