Who Libra Actually Is
Libra covers September 23 to October 22: cardinal air, ruled by Venus, and far more of an instigator than its reputation allows. Cardinal signs start things. Libra starts them by pulling other people in, which is why the initiative keeps getting mistaken for compliance.
The whole sign is organized around the other person. Libra is the one who noticed you hadn't been asked a single question all evening and quietly turned the table back your way. It clocks which of your friends is broke and which two can't be seated together, and it arranges the night around both without being asked. That's the great strength, and it's the trap: a sign that reads a room this well tends to give the room what it wants and then keep a private tally of the cost.
Venus supplies the rest. Libra cares what things look like, sound like, feel like to be inside of, and will spend money it doesn't have on a chair. It would also rather be in a mediocre partnership than in none at all, and that single fact explains most of what a Libra does.
Libra Personality
Charm first, since it's the thing people meet. A Libra will argue your position back to you more persuasively than you managed, and you'll leave the conversation feeling brilliant and unable to say what the Libra thinks. Some of that is honest interest; other people's reasoning is interesting to a Libra. It also works as cover, and Libra knows it works.
Underneath is a cardinal sign with opinions and a very low tolerance for being disliked. Ask a Libra where it wants to eat and it will ask where you want to eat. It has a preference. It formed the preference in about two seconds. What follows looks like deliberation and is closer to a hunt: Libra is looking for the version of its preference that nobody in the room will object to, and if there isn't one, the preference gets dropped.
It's funnier than the sign's press suggests, and considerably more competitive. Libra keeps score. It just won't tell you the game has started.
Libra Strengths
Put a Libra in a room ten minutes before it goes badly wrong and it will de-escalate on instinct, find the sentence that lets both parties climb down without losing face, and do it so smoothly that nobody afterward can say a save even happened.
The fairness holds up under cost. A Libra will take the side of the person it likes least, in public, because the person it likes least happens to be right. That is rare, it is expensive, and Libra pays it more often than the sign gets credit for.
Then there's the attention. Libra remembers the name of your sister's dog, notices the haircut, texts the day after the interview. Being paid attention to by a Libra is a specific pleasure, and it's why the sign collects people the way it does.
And it's built for partnership in the working sense. Not flowers, though it likes flowers. Libra is good at the labor of being one of two: negotiating, adjusting, conceding the small thing to win the week, keeping alive something that has two names on it.
Libra Weaknesses
Start with the niceness, because it does more damage than the indecision ever has. It's a strategy for not being disliked, and the bill lands on whoever eventually needs a straight answer from a Libra and gets a warm one instead.
The specialty is the invoice nobody agreed to. Libra agrees to the holiday it didn't want, the apartment it didn't want, the job it didn't want, says nothing at any point, and keeps a running account. Two years later it presents an invoice to somebody who had no idea they were being billed and who would have chosen differently if asked. Libra calls that sacrifice. From the outside it looks like a refusal to take part in your own life.
The conflict-avoidance is the expensive one. It doesn't only postpone fights, it ends relationships slowly: a Libra will stay years past the finish, being lovely, waiting for the other person to do the leaving. And a furious Libra doesn't shout. It turns scrupulously fair, faultlessly courteous and completely unreachable. There is no colder room.
Libra in Love
Libra falls in love with the couple, occasionally before it has finished falling in love with the person. Courtship is where it's the best in the world: attentive, funny, generous, unnervingly good at knowing what you'd like before you've said it. Nobody has ever been better at the first four months.
What comes next is quieter. Libra starts adjusting. It takes on your films, your friends, your Sundays. Each of those is a small optimization for harmony, and by year three a Libra can't tell you what it likes when nobody is watching. The partner, meanwhile, has been agreeing to things they didn't want either, because Libra never said what it wanted and somebody had to steer.
Libras rarely leave first. They wait, they hint, they become extraordinarily kind, and quite often the next thing is standing by before the current one has ended. That's the part Libras don't enjoy reading about, and it's among the most consistent behaviors the sign has.
Libra at Work
Libra is who the company sends in when the client is furious, and it works, every time. Law, design, HR, diplomacy, client work, anything where the job is largely about managing a person's experience of the thing. Venus also means a Libra can see that something is ugly and say why, which is worth more than most organizations understand.
The problem is what it gets promoted into. Libra becomes everyone's confidant, the trusted neutral party, the one who hears both sides of the department's feud. That's a second job, unpaid, and it appears on no review.
And Libra doesn't ask for the raise. Asking is a conflict, conflict is the one thing it won't do, so it waits to be noticed and frequently isn't. Then it goes quietly bitter about a colleague with half its ability and none of its manners, who simply asked. The fix is one uncomfortable meeting, and a Libra can find a reason not to book that meeting for a decade.
Libra as a Friend
Libra's address book is enormous. It introduced two of your friends to each other and they got married, and it still remembers what everyone drinks. In a group it's the connective tissue: it clocks the person standing at the edge of the circle and goes over.
The asymmetry is worth naming. A Libra knows what's happening in your life in detail. You would struggle to describe what's happening in its. Ask a Libra how it's doing and you'll get a warm, funny, content-free answer and then a question back about you, and you'll take the question, because everybody takes the question.
So its friendships aren't always friendships in the way it needs them to be. When something goes badly wrong, a Libra tends to discover it has fifty people who would take the call and two it would tell. That is fixable. It usually takes about twenty years to notice.
What Libra Is Working On
The work is learning to be disliked on purpose. Not cruelly. Once, deliberately: say the first-person sentence with nothing softening it. I don't want to go. I think you're wrong. I'd rather stay in. Then watch what happens, which is usually nothing, and notice that the room did not collapse.
Second, close the account. No more invoices, which means saying what you want at the time, in the room, before any resentment can accrue. The trade is unpleasant for about six weeks and after that it's simply how life works.
Third, and hardest: stop treating being liked as evidence of being loved. Libra is extremely good at the first and has usually been living off it. The second requires somebody to have met the unlovely part and stayed anyway, and a Libra who never shows the unlovely part never finds out. None of this makes a Libra less charming. It gives the charm something to be about.

Gemini and Aquarius, both at 10/10 with a 10 in every column, which almost never happens on one row. They're the two signs that argue with a Libra instead of being disarmed by it, and Libra needs the resistance more than it needs the ease.
