Pisces Compatibility

Pisces has chemistry with almost everybody, which is exactly why its grid needs reading slowly. It's built to attune. Give it an hour and a drink and it will find the frequency of whoever's sitting opposite, and that feeling of instant understanding tells you nothing whatsoever about whether the two of you should live together.

What decides a Pisces relationship is shape. Pisces pours into whatever container is offered and doesn't get much of a vote about it, so the only question that matters is what the container is like. The grid says it plainly: water and earth right across the top, air and fire right across the bottom, nothing crossing over. Signs that hold a shape score well. Signs that are also busy dissolving score 2 and 3. Virgo, the opposite sign, is the interesting exception at 6: it'll hand Pisces the structure it can't build for itself, then criticize it the whole time it's handing it over.

The uncomfortable part is that Pisces enjoys the low scorers. They're funny, they're quick, they're wonderful at a party. It'll marry one and spend fifteen years wondering why it feels lonely in company.

Pisces's Best Matches

Cancer and Scorpio both score 10, straight tens in every column, and they get there by different routes.

With Cancer, nothing ever has to be explained. Neither of them has had to justify a mood or apologize for the size of a feeling, and the relief on both sides is enormous. Cancer builds the house and Pisces fills it. Watch one thing: Cancer's memory for a wound is very long and Pisces forgets everything, so Cancer is often keeping a score Pisces doesn't know exists.

Scorpio gives Pisces a spine. Scorpio decides. It's the container Pisces has been looking for and it comes at a price, because Scorpio is certain about everything, including you. What makes the price worth paying is that Scorpio is the one person a Pisces has never once successfully told the softened version to.

Taurus arrives at 8 and Capricorn at 8, both with friendship up at 10, and neither is where Pisces feels the electricity. That's the point. Taurus gives it a body and a Sunday. Capricorn gives it a roof and takes over the paperwork.

Two Pisces score 9, the loveliest line on the grid, and the only match here where the container is made of water too.

Pisces's Hardest Matches

Sagittarius at 2 is the lowest number on this grid, and the detail is worse: trust 1, friendship 2, long-term 2. Two mutable signs at a square, and nobody in the room can hold still. Sagittarius says the true thing at full volume and counts the saying of it as a kindness. Pisces is still bleeding from a sentence Sagittarius forgot before lunch. And Sagittarius gets a raw deal too: Pisces won't say what's wrong, goes quiet, and leaves it to work out what it did. It never will.

Gemini manages a 3. Trust: 2. Gemini's lightness isn't unkindness, and it'll feel like unkindness every week. Pisces hears a tone in a message that was never in it, Gemini says so, and Pisces takes that as being told its feelings are wrong. Which, technically, it is.

Aries and Leo sit at 4, with heat and no patience for the vanishing act. Libra and Aquarius, also 4, will discuss the feeling at length, from a chair, when what was needed was to be held.

Everything at the bottom of this list needs Pisces to say what's wrong, in words, on the day. It won't. So it ends over something neither of them can name.

What Pisces Needs From a Partner

Somebody with edges. A partner who makes the plan, holds the line, and has a spine that doesn't give when Pisces leans on it, because Pisces will lean.

Somebody who asks twice, because the first answer is always that it's fine, honestly, and the first answer is never true.

Somebody who can be disappointed in front of it without collapsing, so that Pisces slowly learns that letting a person down isn't a catastrophe and doesn't end anything.

Somebody who comes and knocks when it goes under, and keeps knocking, and isn't angry about the knocking.

And the hard one: somebody who refuses to be managed by its sacrifices. When Pisces gives more than it was asked for and then wears the cost around the house, the loving response is to say it out loud, kindly. I didn't ask you to do that, and I'm not going to feel bad about it. It'll sting. It's the only thing that ever works, and the Pisces who hears it will be grateful eventually, in about four years, in a sentence it doesn't finish.
