Look east before sunrise on July 4, 2026, and you'll catch Mars and Uranus sitting closest together in the sky, part of a string of planetary conjunctions unfolding across the year.6

A planetary conjunction happens when two planets appear close together in the sky, even though they are actually millions of miles apart in space.6 The planets only look near each other because they follow roughly the same path across the sky, called the ecliptic.6

What's coming next in 2026

In late June and early July, reddish Mars and Uranus drift toward each other in the eastern predawn sky, rising about two and a half hours before sunrise.6 They reach their closest approach on the morning of July 4.6

Mercury and Jupiter are next. In early August, Mercury sinks lower while Jupiter climbs higher in the eastern morning sky, and the two appear closest on August 15, rising about an hour before sunrise.6

That same August 15 date is flagged elsewhere as a Jupiter-Mercury meeting worth watching.1 A broader planetary alignment, sometimes called a planet parade, is also expected around August 12, 2026, in the morning sky.3

Later in the year, Mars and Jupiter are also due for a morning conjunction on November 16.6

Looking further ahead

If you miss 2026's meetings, mark your calendar for 2027, when Venus and Mercury form a triple conjunction across three separate encounters.1 The first happens July 1, 2027, followed by a second on August 11, 2027, and a third on October 10, 2027.1

Occasionally a conjunction gets even more dramatic: one planet can pass directly in front of another, creating what's called a planetary occultation.6 These moments are rare, so a close approach like the July 4 Mars-Uranus pairing is worth setting an early alarm for.6

Why these events matter to astronomers

From a purely visual standpoint, a conjunction or a wider planetary alignment looks like a disciplined line of bright points strung across the twilight sky. But astronomers describe it differently: as a three-dimensional syzygy, a lineup that reveals the flat, disk-like structure of our own solar system.

The planets aren't actually crowding together at all.6 They just happen to share our sightline for a few mornings, a trick of geometry rather than a true gathering.6
