Virgo Compatibility
Virgo (August 23 – September 22) is an Earth Mutable sign ruled by Mercury. Here is how Virgo matches with all 12 signs, ranked best to worst.
Virgo's grid is the most legible on the site. Earth and water score high, fire and air score low, and there's very little argument in the middle. What it reflects is a single requirement, and it's not a romantic one: Virgo needs a partner who does what they said they'd do. Nearly everything else is negotiable. Charm isn't the thing. Wit isn't the thing. Big plans absolutely aren't the thing, and a person who is late twice will find that a file has been opened on them.
The signs it does badly with aren't bad people. They're improvisers. They change the plan on the way to the restaurant, say things they don't mean and forget having said them, and they experience Virgo's need for a fixed arrangement as a kind of small-mindedness. Meanwhile Virgo is watching, and counting, and it never forgets a number.
The other thing the grid gives away is that Virgo's romances are almost always friendships first. Friendship scores a 10 with every one of its top five matches. Nothing here starts with a thunderbolt.
Virgo: every match, ranked
Virgo's Best Matches
Nothing at the top of this board got there by being interesting. Taurus and Capricorn each reach a 10, and the tens repeat in communication, trust, friendship and long-term, which is what a decade of turning up on the agreed day looks like once it's been put on a chart. Taurus supplies the one thing Virgo can't produce on its own, which is a full stop: it's the partner who takes the laptop out of your hands at ten at night, puts food in front of you, and declines to discuss it further. Capricorn is the working partnership that turns into the marriage. Two people who agree instinctively about money, effort and what a person owes, and who will build something between them that stands up in weather.
The water signs are the sleeper picks, an 8 each and better than that sounds. Cancer likes being looked after by somebody competent about it, and hands back warmth in a register Virgo can't generate for itself. Scorpio is the one that surprises people: two forensic minds, neither of whom is fooled by anybody, and being seen accurately turns out to be the most restful thing that has ever happened to either of them.
Virgo paired with itself comes out at 9, communication and trust at 10, and the household is immaculate in every sense you can measure. The snag is small and permanent: two people wired to the same worry, and not one of them built to be the voice that says it'll be fine.
Virgo's Hardest Matches
The worst pairing on Virgo's board is Sagittarius, a 2 with trust scraping 1, and it starts going wrong immediately. Sagittarius says whatever is true at the moment of speaking and means none of it as a promise. Virgo hears a commitment and writes it down. Run that for four years and you have one person who feels systematically lied to and another who cannot understand what the fuss is about, and neither of them is being unreasonable, which is why it doesn't resolve. Gemini, one point up at 3, is the same wound with a faster pulse. Both signs are mutable and Mercury-ruled, and the shared ruler is a trap: they use the identical instrument for opposite purposes, one to be accurate, one to be entertaining.
Then four signs tied on 4, all failing the same way from different angles, by asking Virgo to accept a version of events it can see isn't true. Leo needs applause and Virgo is congenitally unable to supply it on demand. Aries treats a correction as an act of war. Libra will agree with you to keep the evening pleasant and then do exactly what it intended, which a sign that asks direct questions and expects direct answers cannot live with. Aquarius is devoted to humanity in general and vague about the bins.
Pisces is the one open question, at 6. Opposite sign, so it goes one of two ways: the tenderest thing that ever happened to you, or a very long disappointment about competence.
What Virgo Needs From a Partner
To be noticed, specifically. Virgo does an enormous volume of invisible work, will never ask you to see any of it, and is keeping count regardless. The remedy is cheap and hardly anybody applies it: name the actual thing. Not "you do so much for us." Say that you saw the forms got filed, the appointment got moved, the problem got handled before it became a problem. Do that four times a year and you'll defuse years of quiet resentment before it sets.
It needs a partner who says what they mean and then goes and does it. Virgo copes with bad news perfectly well. It cannot cope with somebody who says "yes, definitely, sure" and then doesn't, because every one of those goes into the file, and the file is what gets read out loud eventually.
It needs to be told, in plain words, that it isn't being graded here.
And it needs somebody with the nerve to take the work out of its hands, put a coffee in front of it, and not apologize for having done that.
