Leo Compatibility

Leo's grid splits along element lines, and it isn't subtle about it. Fire scores 10. Air scores 8. Earth and water never get above 4, and two of them bottom out at 2. That's about as elemental as compatibility gets, and it's telling you exactly what Leo requires from a partner: pace, volume, and somebody who isn't embarrassed by it in front of other people.

The signs that do well here don't try to lower the temperature. They come up to meet it, or they enjoy the show, or they find the whole thing funny. The signs that do badly aren't cold or hostile. They're quieter, more private, more inward, and living alongside a Leo they'll spend years wincing at the volume and gradually withdrawing their approval, which is the one thing this sign cannot survive on short rations.

Leo's Best Matches

Fire meets fire and the board gives up two 10s, which it does not do often: Aries and Sagittarius, tens in all six columns, nothing shaved off anywhere. With Aries you get two people moving at the same speed who fight loudly and are over it by dinner, and neither one carries the grudge overnight, which is the mechanism that makes fixed fire survivable at all. Sagittarius is the easier of the two. It laughs at Leo without ever diminishing it, which almost nobody else manages, and it's happy to let Leo be the main event because it isn't applying for the job.

Air gets there by another route and fields two 8s. Gemini takes a 10 in communication and another in friendship, and it's the one sign that can tease Leo out of a sulk before the sulk has set. Libra, the second of them, is the most straightforwardly pleasant pairing anywhere on this grid: two people who like beauty, company and being adored, arranged so that neither has to fight the other for any of it.

Leo with Leo is the loud exception: a 9, with tens in passion, trust and friendship, two people who honestly delight in each other's size. The 8 is long-term, and the crack in it is seating. A stage holds one headliner. By year three they're taking turns at it, graciously, and each can tell you precisely whose turn it currently is.

Leo's Hardest Matches

Two fixed signs at a square means nobody moves, ever, so arguments don't end. They go underground and come back a year later with the original wording intact. That is what a 2 looks like, and Leo has two of them, Taurus and Scorpio, each with communication scraping a 1. Taurus finds Leo exhausting, expensive and slightly ridiculous, and will say so once, flatly, in a sentence that takes off several layers of skin. Scorpio wants the one thing Leo can't hand over, a private self, and will keep testing for it until Leo gets louder, and then it'll draw the conclusion it was always going to draw.

The middle of the board is quieter and in some ways worse, because nothing dramatic ever happens to tell you it's failing. Virgo corrects Leo in front of other people and is honestly surprised to find it landed as an insult. Cancer wants the door shut and a quiet Sunday, and gets a party. Aquarius, on 6, is the one worth thinking about. It's the opposite sign, so the pull is there, and Aquarius is unimpressed by status as a matter of principle. Status is the fuel here.

What Leo Needs From a Partner

Attention, obviously, and almost everybody gets the execution wrong. Generic praise is worth nothing to a Leo and is quietly logged as evidence you weren't watching. What lands is specific and evidently observed: name the thing it worked on, say why it was hard, and be right about it. Leo will still be quoting you back to yourself long after you've forgotten you said it.

It needs to be looked at by its own partner in public. A Leo standing in a crowded room being ignored by the person it arrived with is a Leo halfway out the door. The bar here is not high. Touch its arm, laugh at the story you've heard four times, let it have the floor for a while.

It needs somebody who will tell it the truth in private and never, ever in front of an audience. Leo takes hard criticism well and will change on the strength of it. Being corrected at a table with other people at it is a different event entirely, and it remembers who did that for years.

And it needs one person it's allowed to be unimpressive with, who won't go cold on it for the duration.
