Aquarius Compatibility

Aquarius has the cleanest split on the wheel. Every fire and air sign sits above it and every earth and water sign sits below it, with nothing crossing over. Gemini and Libra take 10. Aquarius with itself takes 9. Aries and Sagittarius come to 8, Leo to 6, and then there's a wall, and behind the wall Taurus and Scorpio are on 3.

One thing sorts them. Every sign at the bottom of Aquarius's list needs to be reassured, regularly, in a way it can feel. Every sign at the top treats autonomy as the normal condition of an adult and doesn't take distance personally. That's the whole test, and it's more predictive than chemistry, which Aquarius has with almost anybody for about six weeks.

What it's looking for is harder to name than what it's avoiding: to be left alone accurately, by somebody who is definitely still there. It'll wait a long time for that person and be perfectly content while it waits, which is not quite the same as being fine.

Aquarius's Best Matches

Gemini and Libra both hit 10, and they hit it in every column on the board. Straight tens, top to bottom. The grid doesn't hand those out often.

Gemini is the one that never bores it and never asks it to be more emotionally forthcoming, because Gemini doesn't want that either. The two of them can talk for six years and never say anything true, and both will be perfectly happy, right up until one of them isn't.

Libra is the one that warms it. Libra runs the social machinery Aquarius refuses to run, which is how Aquarius keeps friendships it would otherwise lose to sheer neglect. In exchange, Aquarius should watch how obviously it finds Libra's need to be liked unserious.

Then the fire signs, both at 8. Aries brings what air can't: somebody who acts. Sagittarius scores a 10 for communication, and the two of them can argue about anything for an entire evening without either one taking it home.

Aquarius paired with itself lands on 9, a long exercise in magnificent mutual non-interference.

Aquarius's Hardest Matches

Scorpio and Taurus are both 3s, and they're 3s for the same structural reason: a fixed sign squaring a fixed sign, so nothing in the fight has anywhere to go.

Scorpio wants total access and treats anything less as a betrayal. Aquarius treats total access as an insult to its dignity and will not grant it under pressure of any kind. Scorpio's intensity feels to Aquarius like being investigated. Aquarius's calm feels to Scorpio like contempt. They're both reading it correctly. Trust and communication sit at 3 apiece, which is what you get when neither person can move and neither one is wrong.

Taurus is quieter and no easier. Taurus asks to be reassured with routine, presence and touch, in that order, forever. Aquarius reassures with a principle: I said I'd stay, why do you keep asking. The asking was the entire point, and it never gets answered.

Cancer and Pisces get to 4 and no further, and so do Virgo and Capricorn. They fail on the same request: name a feeling, on demand, now.

Aquarius rarely leaves these relationships. It's fixed. It stays. It just isn't there anymore, and it'll be surprised to be told so.

What Aquarius Needs From a Partner

Autonomy, and not as a concession. If freedom arrives as something you've generously granted, Aquarius has already noted the transaction and begun, quietly, to leave.

Never issue an ultimatum. Aquarius takes the exit calmly, without raising its voice, and doesn't come back, and you'll spend years wondering how somebody walks away from something they clearly loved. It's a fixed sign. What it fixes on can be a principle as easily as a person.

Say things once, plainly, and don't repeat them. Repetition reads as pressure, and pressure makes concrete.

Bond sideways. Aquarius doesn't open up across a table with the lights on. It opens up beside you at one in the morning while the two of you are busy with a third thing that has nothing to do with either of you.

And insist on being a person, not a principle. Aquarius will defend anyone in your position. Make it defend you because it's you, and don't let it retreat into the general case. That's the whole relationship, right there.
